How do I affordably furnish my home? This questions is one of the most asked from Homeowners! To answer this, I’m going in depth on the finances that comprise Interior Design. As with any design project, it’s important to know what you’re getting into finance wise.

There are many factors that go into planning for your next home, construction project, or renovation. One of those aspects is budgeting for furnishings. Furnishing a home can be overwhelming which is why Designer’s like myself have made a career out of helping homeowners just like you.
To get started, we’re going to look at a single room. Living rooms, for example, tend to be one of the most expensive rooms to furnish for multiple reasons:
- They tend to be larger in square footage.
- They often have additional features such as fireplaces which require additional decor.
- As a main living space, visitors often spend time in this area so appearance becomes more important.
- These rooms are used constantly and therefore require more durable furniture.
When furnishing a space, furniture finances can broken into three different categories: Good, Better, Best. These fees are determined by several factors including materials used, build quality, style, accessibility, durability, comfort level, customization of the product, and so much more.
Living Rooms are composed of so many products (sofa, loveseat, ottomans, lighting, area rug, end tables, coffee table, window treatments, etc) that it’s difficult to understand the cost. However, homeowners understand that couches can range from $2,500 to upwards of $7,000. When you put this into perspective of the entire room, the costs add up.
I’ve gone ahead and listed all of the Good, Better, Best for each product that composes a Living Room design to share with you for budgeting purposes.
I’m here to help you stay informed through every step of the design process so you know where to save and where to invest your money. Download below.

You’ll note from the guide that living room budgeting is as follows:
- Good can cost $22,000+
- Better can cost $40,000+
- Best can cost $60,000+
The above pricing does not include tax, shipping or any other applicable fees. When working with a Designer, you can expect to see higher shipping costs as Designer’s order straight from the manufacturer which require freight shipping (more on that later).
I hope this budgeting guide has helped you understand the costs of furnishing your Living Room. As a reminder, the full budgeting guide for an entire home is below!
